The Entrepreneur: Bold, Rational and Original

By Linda Otieno

Welcome back to our Personality & Communication series.

For the past few posts, we have been discussing how your personality affects the way you communicate. By understanding your personality, you can know how you can communicate better irrespective of the method you're using.

We've been exploring the 16 personality types to understand this theme. So far, we've done 2 personality types: The Entertainer & The Advocate

This week, we're looking into The Entrepreneur personality type.

Introduction

The best way to spot someone with The Entrepreneur personality type is finding that person at a party who always has people around them following them from group to group. This person is often making everyone laugh with their blunt sense of humour.

Entrepreneur personality types enjoy parties and hanging around people. They are extroverts, talkative, social and charming.

The Entrepreneur is called ESTP. ESTP defines these key dimensions or traits:

E- Extraversion - They are energized by interacting & talking to people.

S- Sensing - They are realistic people who like to focus on facts & details.

T- Thinking- They tend to make decisions using logic.

P- Perceptive (or Prospecting)- They prefer to keep their options open, like to be able to act spontaneously & like to be flexible when making plans.

Strengths of The Entrepreneur personality type

1. Bold – People with the Entrepreneur personality type are full of life and energy. There is no greater joy for Entrepreneurs than pushing boundaries and discovering and using new things and ideas.

Implication- What this suggests is that Entrepreneurs tend to be brave in the way they communicate. In other words, they are typically alright with saying things that others may not agree with or be comfortable with or ready for. They are likely to not only voice new ideas, but actively try them out because of their courageous nature.

2. Rational and Practical – Entrepreneurs love knowledge and philosophy, but not for their own sake. What’s fun for Entrepreneur personalities is finding ideas that are actionable and drilling into the details so they can put them to use. If a discussion is completely arbitrary, there are better uses for Entrepreneurs’ time.

Implication- This indicates that Entrepreneurs tend to communicate in a way that is logical. They don't usually use an emotional approach to communicate & figure things out. This probably stems from their Thinking trait. The Thinking trait means that they prefer to use logical analysis, and to weigh the pros & cons to make a decision rather than relying on their feelings.

3. Original – Combining their boldness and practicality, Entrepreneurs love to experiment with new ideas and solutions. They put things together in ways no one else would think to.

Implication-  This suggests that they often communicate new, unique ideas. A conversation with The Entrepreneur personality type will never be boring! When they speak to you, you may be surprised by them saying things that you didn't realise before because they just have this natural ability to observe & create links between what they're observing.

4. Perceptive – This originality is helped by Entrepreneurs’ ability to notice when things change – and when they need to change! Small shifts in habits and appearances stick out to Entrepreneurs, and they use these observations to help create connections with others.

Implication- Since they are so good at observing, they know what they should say to convince you to do something. They are able to tell what makes you tick. This is a powerful tool in communication because if you understand who you're talking to then you'll know what to say & how to say it.

5. Direct – This perceptive skill isn’t used for mind games – Entrepreneurs prefer to communicate clearly, with direct and factual questions and answers. Things are what they are.

Implication- This shows that they usually communicate in a way that is pretty direct. They use  facts - they tell exactly how it is. They're probably not the type to sugarcoat things. So, more sensitive personality types may have a bit of a hard time communicating with The Entrepreneur.

6. Sociable – All these qualities pull together to make a natural group leader in Entrepreneurs. This isn’t something that they actively seek – people with this personality type just have a knack for making excellent use of social interactions and networking opportunities.

Implication- This indicates that they are great in communicating in social situations. Doesn't matter if it's just at work, at a family gathering or at an event where they're trying to network with others. They are just naturally sociable. Being sociable means that they are willing to talk and engage in activities with other people. It also means that they are really friendly.

Weaknesses of The Entrepreneur personality type

1. Insensitive – Feelings and emotions come second to facts and “reality” for Entrepreneurs. Emotionally charged situations are awkward, uncomfortable affairs, and Entrepreneurs’ blunt honesty doesn’t help here. These personalities often have a lot of trouble acknowledging and expressing their own feelings as well.

Implication- People with The Entrepreneur personality type have a really hard time relating to people who operate from the point of emotions as their default. This is because Entrepreneurs have the Thinking trait which means that they often use logic rather than emotions to deal with situations, as I explained above. They also have the Sensing trait which means that they are realistic people who like to focus on facts & details. They can be hyperfocused on a factual, practical approach that they ignore other people's feelings when they talk.

2. Impatient – Entrepreneurs move at their own pace to keep themselves excited. Slowing down because someone else “doesn’t get it” or having to stay focused on a single detail for too long is extremely challenging for Entrepreneurs.

Implication- This shows that they tend to be extremely impatient when they are talking to someone who they feel can't keep up with them. Unlike the more sensitive personalities, they don't have the patience to take time to explain things to someone who they feel is not moving at the same pace as them. They also think & make connections pretty quickly so if you can't keep up with that, they may be impatient & curt in they way they communicate with you.

3. Risk-prone – This impatience can lead Entrepreneurs to push into uncharted territory without thinking of the long-term consequences. Entrepreneur personalities sometimes intentionally combat boredom with extra risk.

Implication- This implies that they say whatever they are thinking without reflecting on how it may affect the person they're talking to. They are natural risk-takers & this may bleed into their communication style.

4. Unstructured – Entrepreneurs see an opportunity – to fix a problem, to advance, to have fun – and seize the moment, often ignoring rules and social expectations in the process. This may get things done, but it can create unexpected social fallout.

Implication- Since they don't care much what society thinks of them, they may be reckless in what they say. This may cause unwanted conflict.

5. May Miss the Bigger Picture – Living in the moment can cause Entrepreneurs to miss the forest for the trees. People with this personality type love to solve problems here and now, perhaps too much. All parts of a project can be perfect, but the project will still fail if those parts do not fit together.

Implication- This indicates that they tend to overlook the main point because they like to focus on the here & now. So, if they miss the big picture when  you communicate with them, may be help them get there.

6. Defiant – Entrepreneurs won’t be boxed in. Repetition, hardline rules, sitting quietly while they are lectured at – this isn’t how Entrepreneurs live their lives. They are action-oriented and hands-on. Environments like school and much entry-level work can be so tedious that they’re intolerable, requiring extraordinary effort from Entrepreneurs to stay focused long enough to get to freer positions.

Implication- When you communicate with them, don't make them feel controlled. Talking to them in a way that is monotonous & dry will make them lose concentration & interest so fast.

Relationships

Friendships

It's so easy for the Entrepreneur to make new friends because they are easy-going, charming and tolerant making them quite popular. Hands-on, physical activities like team sports are Entrepreneurs’ idea of fun, and these environments give them plenty of chances to make new friends. They seem to get along with just about everyone. They are similarly easy-going and charming with the friends they already have. They always attract new people to them and tend to have a lot of friends.

Parenthood

Entrepreneurs are what many children would consider the perfect parent. They are so fun-loving and playful. This is perfect for children because, as you know, they are playful and fun-loving as well. Entrepreneurs have a natural curiosity and spontaneity. This goes well with the wonder and insatiable desire to learn that young children have.

Romantic relationships

Entrepreneurs are not exactly the type of people who are longing for their wedding day. They like enjoying the here and the now. However, they are exciting dating partners because they are spontaneous and full or surprises.

Entrepreneurs love new ideas and the occasional philosophical discussion, but they need to be topics that can explored through action together, not just idle talk. So, if an Entrepreneur is dating you, they expect someone who takes action along with them. Words alone won't excite them. If you talk about making a certain change with your Entrepreneur partner, then act on it because you can be assured that the Entrepreneur certainly will.

Careers

Entrepreneurs are great at careers like sports, sales, business, marketing and acting.

As we've already said above, Entrepreneurs love spontaneity, excitement & surprises. They love high action. They love to think on their feet. They are good at making quick decisions. Acting and making decisions in the heat of the moment is something they are totally alright with. They are also really social, likeable and talkative so they make connections easily.

All this added together means that Entrepreneurs are great at careers like sports, sales, business, marketing, acting, freelancing, paramedics, police officers and soldiers.
